RESOURCE The Nathan L. and Suzanne K. Wolfson Fund Merit Award

Since its inception in 2018, the award—honoring the memory of longtime JBI trustee and honorary officer Nathan L. Wolfson and his wife, Suzanne—has given $496,288 in scholarships to Jewish undergraduate and graduate students who are legally blind and attending an accredited university or college. Nathan L. Wolfson, z”l, established this program to provide educational scholarships to blind and low vision Jewish students at accredited colleges and universities.

Applications for the 2026-2027 cycle of the Wolfson Scholarship are now open. More information and the link to apply are below.

An individual is eligible for the Wolfson Scholarship if they meet the following criteria:

  • They provide medical documentation from a qualified professional attesting to at least one of the following:
    • They have central visual acuity of 20/70 or worse in the better eye with the use of a correcting lens, or
    • They have an eye which has a limitation in the field of vision such that the widest diameter of the visual field subtends an angle no greater than 20 degrees.
  • They have a strong academic record and a demonstrated engagement with the Jewish community.
  • They attend an accredited college or university and are enrolled in a degree-granting program. Applicants must be enrolled for the fall 2026 semester to be eligible. Students may be enrolled either full-time or part-time and may be pursuing studies at the undergraduate or graduate level. Individuals earning college credit from a short-term program as administered by an accredited college or university (e.g., a gap-year program or a study abroad opportunity) are also eligible.

Prize amounts are determined based on the number of qualified applicants and the availability of funds each year. Each student selected for a Wolfson Scholarship receives at least $2,500. Previous scholarship recipients are eligible to reapply.
