why support jelf When you give back, Jewish students go forward.
JELF is dedicated to supporting deserving students through interest-free educational loans. Thanks to the generosity of our 2023 donors, we provided $2,158,564 in funding to 473 recipients. However, as inflation rises and families encounter growing costs of living, JELF faces significant unmet needs. Your support is crucial in bridging this gap and continuing our mission of empowering students through education.
Why Support JELF?
College is getting more expensive
The average cost of college in the United States is $25K a year. This cost is only going to continue to grow.
Income rarely matches college costs
31% of the families JELF serves have a household income of under $50K. The Jewish community is not immune to debt or hardship.
JELF's repayment rate is 99%
This means that your donation will live in perpetuity - as loans are paid back, these dollars are "recycled" to help more students going forward.
Resources and Transparency:
JELF provides interest-free loans to Jewish students from a five-state region (FL, GA, NC, SC, VA, excluding metro DC) for undergrad, graduate or vocational programs. Students can attend any U.S. accredited school.
JELF's vision is that every Jewish student with financial hardship can borrow interest-free to obtain the accredited higher education of their choice.
JELF is audited annually and prides itself on its commitment to accountability and financial transparency, ensuring donors and partners have full confidence in the stewardship of funds:
You can also verify JELF's non-profit status with the official IRS determination letter, affirming its commitment to operating as a tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
JELF’s revenue sources stem from:
- Fundraising: Grants requests and individual solicitations account for roughly 15% of JELF’s yearly income. Additionally, JELF’s volunteer board actively helps achieve its financial objectives by regularly soliciting new and former donors.
- Investments: JELF's modest investment account is carefully monitored and stewarded by JELF’s longtime investment firm, as well as JELF's Treasurer, finance and investment committees, and longtime COO.
- Repayments: JELF’s 99% student repayment rate ensures that its interest-free investments in deserving Jewish students provide a steady return of funds -- which are then reloaned to current/future applicants.
JELF's dynamic professional team is comprised of dedicated staff members who collectively strive to ensure the success of the organization. With years of experience and unwavering dedication, the JELF team is committed to serving its mission with passion and expertise, making a lasting impact on the lives of deserving students.
JELF’s singular focus provides a direct impact by enabling students to maximize their personal and professional potential and become contributing members of society.
Unfortunately, the relative wealth of the Jewish community often shadows the fact that there are many low-and middle-income Jews living in the U.S. In total, 10% of students served in 2023 have been on food stamps at any point in their life. 12% currently receive some other form of government aid (e.g. Welfare, Social Security, Medicaid). 23% of undergraduate students received a Pell Grant, which means they demonstrate a significant need. In 2023, 40% of families served by JELF earned less than $60,000 in the last year.
Even with robust financial aid packages (grants, scholarships, family support), many students still experience a significant gap in college funding. JELF’s “gap” loans offset more than just tuition - they also help pay for room and board, books/supplies, transportation, utilities, food and more. In 2023, JELF provided support to 473 students with $2,158,564 in interest-free loans.
JELF’s interest-free loan program runs on a cyclical basis with two application periods. The spring application is open from January – April and services students attending school for the following academic year. For those who miss the spring application, JELF also offers the opportunity to apply each August – September for funding for the following spring and summer semesters.
JELF partners with local Jewish agencies and social workers to administer loans. Work with social workers and other like-minded professional, each applicant is interviewed - and personally guided through the process. In addition, JELF regularly partners with organizations and schools that reach its target audience, including on-campus Hillel and Chabad houses, synagogues, college programs, and more.
Organizational success is evaluated throughJELF's loan program repayment rate and alumni engagement. After a student’s final graduation from school, a borrower has six months to begin repayment, which then extends over an eight-year, graduated period.
JELF has had a 99% repayment rate for 17 consecutive years - proof of the financial self-sufficiency of JELF’s recipients. This is the best indicator of our organizational success.
In addition, the JELF staff evaluates the impact of our interest-free loan program through student and alumni surveys, which are both regularly administered. Through surveys, JELF has learned that the majority of recipients feel a deeper connection with the Jewish community after receiving loans from JELF. This often leads to former recipients seeking opportunities to become more involved and/or contributing back to their Jewish community and/or contributing back to the Jewish community, thus deepening their Jewish engagement.

UNC GreensboroB.A., Media StudiesThank you so much for your support during the past four years of my education! To have additional support from this community was extremely impactful during my time in school. The fact that my class had to face a pandemic while trying to complete our education was incredibly difficult. However, with JELF’s help, I did not have to worry about my finances while facing the altered learning situation the pandemic caused. I am happy to announce that I graduated Summa Cum Laude this past May. It would not of happened without JELF’s support. I thank you all so much, from the bottom of my heart. Being apart of the Jewish community is something that I hold very close to my heart. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate with this wonderful community as I continue my journey into my career.

University of PittsburghDoctor of Dental MedicineWhen I was getting ready to start dental school back in 2015, JELF helped cover some living expenses/tuition which eased a lot of the anxiety I had about starting this new chapter of life in a new city. I graduated from dental school in 2019 and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) in Atlanta the following year. My wife and I (married in March 2020) currently live in Hoschton, GA and I work as an Associate Dentist at an office in Jefferson, GA.

Indiana UniversityBA in MediaHi! My name is Danielle Brawrmen and I am a current freshman at Indiana University – Bloomington. I am a first-generation student in the United States and am pursuing a BA in Media with a concentration in Media Technologies, Games, and Culture and a specialization in Digital Journalism. JELF’s last dollar assistance has allowed me the opportunity to pursue my ideal major at my dream school, and I am forever grateful for that.
I am fortunate enough to have my family contribute to my tuition, but without JELF, none of it would have been possible. Before graduation, I hope to study abroad and participate in some sort of internship in order to develop a better concept of what is expected of me post-graduation. After graduation I would love to be a creative consultant/editor for some sort of magazine. Since I was younger, I have always wanted to be part of that fast-paced environment and I am working hard in order to achieve that goal. I am extremely grateful to JELF for allowing me the opportunity to pursue the best education for me and am thankful to everyone who played a part in helping me be here.

Higher education is a priority for us so JELF’s mission of making it more accessible to those in need is something we love to support. There is no better gift than giving someone an opportunity they may not otherwise receive.
Success Story Steve W.
"JELF's last dollars loans helped me afford my education at Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia in the 1980s. In times of crazy tuition costs, these funds can allow a student to live in acceptable housing and not be forced to work 40 hours per week, on top of pursuing a full-time degree. I am so happy to give back so our next generation can obtain the most important thing in life – an education."
